International courses

Since 1995, the Bundesbank has been offering international central banking courses for central bank staff from around the world. These courses target primarily junior staff at the partner central banks. Up to 20 participants from other central banks can attend the courses, which are held in English. Owing to limited capacity, only one participant from each central bank may attend. In 2012, about 530 members of central banks from over 80 countries participated in 26 international central banking courses.

The goal of the courses is to provide an international forum to exchange ideas, opinions and thoughts, going beyond the mere transfer of specialist expertise. The Bundesbank therefore applies a discerning approach to the design of its international central banking courses. Depending on the target group (management, specialists, beginners or junior staff), the courses either take the form of a seminar, a course with practical parts, (eg on the computer), a discussion forum, or simply a workshop. The length of the course varies, ranging from three days to two weeks.

Courses definition

CategoryDescription of the categories
Training courseStrategyThe training courses are designed to provide a basic understanding of various areas of central banking and an insight into specific central-bank-related matters. The content of the training courses focuses on central bank issues. This is achieved through lectures given by Bundesbank specialists and external experts and through computer-based learning and case studies, which promote the active involvement of course participants, allowing them to build on and improve their practical skills
Target groupThese training courses are primarily aimed at educating and training junior members of staff and new employees in central-bank-related subject areas. Prior knowledge and previous work experience are not required as the courses start from the very basics.
SeminarsStrategyThe individual seminars focus on the core aspects of central banking. The seminars aim to discuss basic central banking issues and to answer any more detailed questions which may arise, thus providing participants with a basis for discussion and an opportunity to exchange views and ideas. The lectures which are held by external specialists and experts from the Deutsche Bundesbank are augmented by discussion contributions and short presentations given by participants.
Target groupThe seminars are primarily designed to give both experienced employees and newcomers the opportunity to broaden, update and exchange their knowledge with other participants.
WorkshopStrategyThe aim of the workshops is to analyse in greater depth specific subject areas related to central banking. The workshops are designed to allow participants to exchange their views and findings with participants from other central banks, allowing them to experience new opinions and ideas. The workshops involve a considerable amount of active participation, such as presentations, working groups and discussions, as well as lectures held by Bundesbank specialists and external experts.
Target groupThe workshops are primarily directed at staff members in the respective specialist working areas with relevant expertise and experience within their specialist fields. They are designed to provide these staff with the opportunity to deepen and expand their knowledge.
Expert PanelStrategyThe expert panel offers specialists from various central banks a forum for discussion. Participants give presentations on their specialist areas, which serves as a basis for further discussions with the other participants and Bundesbank experts. This is augmented by presentations and comments held by specialists from the Bundesbank.
Target groupThe expert panel aims to give managers and experts from the participating central banks the opportunity to exchange views and ideas with colleagues from other central banks through discussions and presentations on their specialist areas.

Brochure
