Banking Supervision

A well functioning economy requires a stable banking system. Banking supervision is therefore responsible for monitoring credit institutions’ business activity and maintaining investor confidence. In Germany, the task of banking supervision is shared by the Bundesbank and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). In particular, the Bundesbank is in charge of monitoring the credit institutions.

Consultation on minimum requirements for recovery plans

BaFin, together with the Bundesbank, has drafted a circular that sets out the minimum requirements for the design of recovery plans for credit institutions. The consultation period for the circular runs until 30 November 2012. Please visit the BaFin website for further information.

EBA workshop on technical standards on supervisory reporting requirements / Update

The EBA organises on 13 September in London a workshop on the technical implementation of the new supervisory reporting requirements. UPDATE: workshop documents, including new ITS templates, have been uploaded. (29.8.2012)

Development in the density of banks in 2011

In 2011, consolidation of the banking sector was slower compared with the previous year. The total number of credit institutions fell to 2,080 institutions, ie a percentage decline of 0.6% vis-à-vis 1.6% in 2010 (in German only).
