The generation that has grown up with the euro currency can now prove their worth once again: the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Deutsche Bundesbank jointly invite students to take part in the 2017-18 Generation €uro Students' Award competition. Visits to the central banks and cash prizes await the most successful participants. Most importantly, however, all participants will have the opportunity to learn a great deal about monetary policy.

Requirements for taking part

The competition is geared towards all school students in secondary education aged between 16 and 19. Each team’s members, consisting of four to five young people, needs to be supported by a teacher. More than one team per school can take part.

Competition procedure

Students can put their knowledge and dedication to the test in a number of rounds. In round 1, teams can take part by answering online quiz questions. The quiz runs from 4 October 2017 and can be played until 8 December 2017 (18:00 CET).

In round 2, the best teams will be given a creative assignment. This phase will last from 11 December 2017 until 31 January 2018 (12:00 CET). Here, the teams will be tasked with forecasting whether the Governing Council of the ECB will lower, increase or maintain the key rate for the euro area.

The Bundesbank will assess the submitted assignments and invite the three teams that best completed the task to the Bundesbank’s Central Office in Frankfurt am Main for the third round on 6 March 2018.

In this third round, the teams in the final will make another decision on interest rates and present this decision to Bundesbank experts. The Bundesbank jury will then select the national winning team, which will receive a prize of €800, with the runner-up receiving €600 and third place €400.

Closing event at the ECB

The winning German team will take part in the European closing event at the ECB in Frankfurt am Main, scheduled to take place on 10 and 11 April 2018, during which ECB President Mario Draghi will present the teams with their certificates.

Around 200 teams registered in Germany alone last year, 50 of which reached the second round. In the end, the team "Eurolution" – five students from the Internatsschule Schloss Hansenberg in Geisenheim – won over the jury in round 3.
