Regular issue coins: minting statistics

Where can I obtain information on DM Coins for circulation?

From 1948 to 1950, the former Bank deutscher Länder had the exclusive right to issue coins. This right was transferred to the Federal Government by the Act on the minting of coins of 8 July 1950. Since then, all coins have been marked with the inscription “Bundesrepublik Deutschland” (Federal Republic of Germany).

Regular issue coins: FAQ

What is the value of coins minted in a particular year? What value does a defectively

The Bundesbank is only responsible for putting an adequate amount of payment media into circulation. It does not trade in coins and is therefore unable to provide information on the value that coins may have for collectors.

Various coin catalogues give detail of DM coins. These can be consulted in libraries and are also on sale in bookshops. It should be noted, however, that the values given are reference values. Whether these can be obtained depends on several factors, the most important being the condition of the coin.

There are still no comparable data for allegedly defective euro coins. Such coins can naturally be exchanged at their face value for valid payment media at all branches of the Bundesbank.

For how long will each euro-area country issue euro banknotes and coins in exchange for national banknotes and coins that have ceased to be legal tender?

The Bundesbank's euro for DM exchange guarantee covers an unlimited amount of cash and runs for an indefinite period. An overview of the exchange periods applying within the euro area is given in the table "exchange periods".

Zum Seitenanfang

Is it still possible to obtain DM coins from the Bundesbank after 2002?

As a result of the introduction of euro banknotes and coins, all payment media denominated in DM ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 2001. No further issue by the Bundesbank is therefore possible. However, both standard DM coins and DM commemorative coins with a face value of DM5 and DM10 are obtainable through commercial coin dealers.

Zum Seitenanfang

In which year were DM coins minted for the last time?

Production of DM coins for payment purposes stopped in 1996.

Between 1997 and 2001 only small quantities of DM coins were minted for the collectors' series handled by the Selling Agency for Collectors' Coins. However, all these coins have since been sold. The sets of collectors' coins were offered in both a proof finish and a standard finish.

Can I still exchange old DM coins and banknotes?

Yes. Information about theexchange can be accessed under DM-banknotes FAQ
