Euro- and Cent-Coins

Malta - as of 1 January 2008

Malta has selected three different motifs for its euro coins. The €1 and €2 coins depict the eight-pointed Maltese cross, symbol of the Order of Malta or the Order of St John, which was based in Malta from 1530 to 1798. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins bear the country’s current coat of arms and the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins show the altar of the prehistoric temple complex of Mnajdra, whose oldest part dates back to 4,000 BC.

  • National identification: Malta
  • Mintmark (of mint): F (Pessac)
  • Edge inscription (2 euro coin) 2++2++2++2++2++2++2++ (+=Maltese cross, every second 2 is upside down)
  • Design: Noel Galea Bason (NGB)
