Dual study programme in business informatics (Bachelor of Science)

Are you looking for a practical and yet academic training programme in business informatics? In cooperation with the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart, the Deutsche Bundesbank offers performance-oriented school-leavers with A levels a challenging dual study programme of around three years leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Informatics. After successfully passing your degree examinations, you can expect to take on a range of demanding IT development tasks as an Upper Intermediate Service employee.

Requirements

Applicants wishing to enrol for training at the college of advanced vocational studies must have a general or a subject-related certificate of aptitude for higher education ("Hochschulreife"); a vocational baccalaureate diploma unfortunately does not meet the requirements. In addition, good grades in mathematics and a good command of German and English are essential. Applicants must also be able to work both independently as well as in a team. Furthermore, you must also be prepared to work anywhere in the country as you may be required to work at various locations both during and after the training programme.

Selection procedure

Once your application has been examined in detail, a selection procedure will be conducted to determine whether you have the necessary knowledge and personality for the study programme and subsequent functions. Selection takes place at a two-stage assessment centre. The first part comprises a mathematics and logical thinking test, an English test and a written summary; the second part, which comprises a one-on-one interview and a group task, is designed to help us to get to know you better as a person.

Further details on the selection procedure may be found in our selection principles (german only).

Recruitment

The dual study programme in Business Informatics starts on 1 September every year with a preparatory work experience placement. Studies at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart commence on 1 October.

Training: theory

The theoretical part of the training programme at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University focuses on subjects in the fields of applied computer science (system development, computer systems and information systems) and business administration (general business administration and banking operations). Lectures in economics, law, mathematics, statistics and operations research are also on the curriculum, as are various seminars as part of application-oriented theory. These seminars are designed, above all, to help students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems in order to learn about various operational functions and to develop methodological and social competence in specific fields.

Training: practice

Practical training takes place mainly in our IT division in Stuttgart, but other options include our Regional Offices in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hanover or Munich.

During the preparatory work experience placement and the first practical training period, students find out about the Bundesbank and acquire a basic knowledge of IT before becoming acquainted with selected functions performed by the Bundesbank (eg payment transactions and banking supervision) in the second practical training period. In the third practical training period, students gain, among other things, an insight into applications and system development and process engineering. The fourth practical training period focuses on participation in IT projects and the writing of the project thesis. In the fifth practical training period, each student must work out a solution to an operational problem in business administration or computer science as part of his/her Bachelor’s thesis. In the sixth practical training period, students participate in IT projects in preparation for their future work.

Every semester, periods of study alternate with practical placements; both last around three months.

Assessment

During the course of the dual training programme at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart and the Deutsche Bundesbank, you will be required to take a range of examinations (written examinations, two project theses, a Bachelor’s thesis and a final oral examination). After successfully completing your studies, you will be awarded the academic qualification of Bachelor of Science.

Applications

The next possible entry date is 1 September 2013. Planned intakes are advertised in the German daily newspapers and on our Job opportunities page (in the summer months over a year before the training programme is due to start). Please apply using our online application form; the relevant web link is given in the advertisement. Online applications should include the usual supporting documents (letter of application, copies of the last two school certificates and – if applicable – copies of job references or training certificates as well as confirmation of having completed military service/community service as a substitute for military service) as file attachments.
