Since 1976, the Bundesbank has been collecting annual statistics on foreign direct investment stocks in accordance with the provisions of the Foreign Trade and Payments Regulation (Außenwirtschaftsverordnung).
In view of the continuing globalisation of the German economy, the database has, for several years, been gaining increasing significance for research purposes. During this time, an active research network of external and internal academics has emerged, which examines and publishes issues relevant to DI.
The Microdatabase Direct Investment (MiDi) forms the key basis of the studies. It contains anonymised individual reports from 1989 onwards, and is available as a panel dataset from 1996 onwards. Reports of these data can regularly be found in the Bundesbank's Special Statistical Publication 10.
The Bundesbank organises an annual workshop on this subject. This makes it possible for researchers working on this area to present new papers based on these data. In addition, Bundesbank specialists provide information on new data set developments.
