Panel Methods and Open Economies

21 May 2008 in Frankfurt am Main

Empirical research on open economy issues has been an active field of investigation in the past few years. Panel econometric methods (including factor models and global VARs, among other things) have been widely used in this area of research. The workshop aims to provide a further stimulus for research on open economy issues involving panel econometric methods.

10th Bundesbank Spring Conference "Central Banks and Globalisation"

22-23 May 2008 in Eltville

Goods, labour and financial markets have experienced rapid integration in the last decade, although the extent of integration varies. Whereas financial markets are closely linked across countries and time zones, labour markets remain largely national in nature. While ultimately beneficial, this process of globalisation appears to have changed the functioning of the macro economy and, by rendering the financial system more interconnected and complex, has potentially impacted on the nature of risks and vulnerabilities of financial and non-financial firms and households.

These developments may have implications for how central banks conduct monetary policy and guard against financial instability. For example, the link between the domestic conditions and inflationary pressures may have weakened, potentially impacting on the effectiveness of monetary policy and the appropriate choice of indicators and information variables. Globalisation may also have increased the speed and extent of the transmission of financial shocks across markets. And the increased scope for regulatory arbitrage may have had implications for the stability of the financial system and the appropriate design of regulatory policy.

The 10th annual spring conference, which the Deutsche Bundesbank has organised jointly with the new Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability at the University of Frankfurt , will address the topics of globalisation and monetary and financial stability.
