Hans Tietmeyer was President of the Deutsche Bundesbank from 1993 to 1999. He passed away on 27 December 2016 at the age of 85. His death led to an outpouring of tributes and media reporting both in Germany and abroad.

The Bundesbank held a memorial on 19 June to commemorate the former president’s achievements and legacy. The event was streamed live on the internet. Videos will follow shortly.

Hans Tietmeyer served at the Bundesbank from 1990 to 1999 – first as a member of the Executive Board, then as vice-president, and finally, from 1993-1999, as president.

A ceremony was held in the Palmengarten in 1993 to mark the occasion of Hans Tietmeyer taking office as Bundesbank President. The guests included the Federal Minister for Economics at the time, Günter Rexrodt (left).

In 1994, Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer visited Pope John Paul II in Rome and was subsequently appointed as a member of the newly founded Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences in Rome.

For his contribution to national and international economic and monetary policy, Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer was bestowed with the Grand Cross 2nd class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996 by the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

Hans Tietmeyer visited Münster in 1992 to mark the introduction of the new 20 D-Mark note featuring Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.
