Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann says the current momentum in the Europe debate should be used in order to effect reforms to make the single currency more crisis-proof. In a speech in Berlin, he voiced scepticism regarding the premature creation of a European deposit insurance scheme and the need for a stabilisation mechanism for euro area countries.

Crises tend to occur unexpectedly and are a threat to financial stability. In an op-ed published in the French daily newspaper Le Monde, Claudia Buch explains that, as a result of the financial crisis, banks need to hold more equity capital in order to be more resilient. As the Bundesbank’s number two writes, "Higher equity capital is the key to a resilient financial system".

The Deutsche Bundesbank has unveiled a special exhibition dedicated to gold at its Money Museum. Exhibits include a selection of the most interesting gold bars and coins from the Bundesbank’s collection. The exhibition will be open until 30 September.

Bundesbank Executive Board member Andreas Dombret believes that the large number of credit institutions, many of which have very different business models, contributes to the strength of the German banking industry. However, when it comes to their earnings, there is definitely room for improvement in many cases, he said in an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt.
