General Currency conversion with effect from 16 June 1980 at the rate of 1 Mozambican escudo (MZE) = 1 metical (MZM). 31 October 1990: introduction of a multiple exchange rate system. Exchange rate application from 31 October 1990 to 31 March 1992: Rate in the "first market": For all foreign exchange transactions not settled at the rate in the "second market". Rate in the "second market": For certain services (including for foreign travel), for payments for small imports and - from 1 July 1991, according to the IMF - for non-traditional exports. 1 April 1992: change of the exchange rate system. Exchange rate application from 1 April 1992 to 31 May 1993: Official exchange rate: For foreign exchange transactions for project-specific development aid. Rate in the "second market": For all other transactions. On 1 June 1993, the multiple exchange rate system was abolished and a standard foreign exchange market was introduced.
