General With effect from 1 January 1981, the vatu was introduced at a rate of 1 New Hebrides franc (NHF) = 1 vatu (VUV). From 1 January 1981 to 9 September 1981, the vatu was pegged to the French franc at a rate of FRF 1 = VUV 16.1616. Listed against the euro as of January 1999, see BBEX3:A:VUV:EUR:CA:AC:A04.
Methodology Calculated on the basis of month-end buying and selling rates, as well as comparable rates in 1981. * We only have data on exchange rates for the Deutsche Mark in Vanuatu as of September 1981. From January until August 1981, the quoted figures are comparable rates calculated using the official quotation on the Frankfurt exchange for French franc in conjunction with the fixed conversion rate of FRF 1 = VUV 16.1616.

Comment on 1986 With effect from 23 October 1986, the vatu was devalued. We recorded the following exchange rates (buying/selling rate): 22 October 1986: DEM 1 = VUV 49.92 / 51.04 23 October 1986: DEM 1 = VUV 58.16 / 59.48 This corresponds to a depreciation of the vatu against the Deutsche Mark of 14.2%.
