General	Since 17 April 1997 member state of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA = Union Économique et Monétaire Ouest Africaine). With effect from 2 May 1997, a currency conversion took place at the rate of 65 Guinea-Bissau pesos (GWP) = 1 CFA franc (XOF). The CFA franc has been the sole legal tender since 1 August 1997 (fixed exchange rate to the French franc: FRF 1 = XOF 100). Exchange rates as of 1999, see BBEX3:A:XOF:USD:CA:AC:A04.

Comment on 1987	On 4 May 1987, the Guinean peso was devalued sharply. We recorded the following exchange rates (buying/selling rate): 29 April 1987: USD 1 = GWP 261.496 / 262.148 4 May 1987: USD 1 = GWP 649.668 / 650.320 Calculated devaluation: 59.7%.
Comment on 1983	On 26 December 1983, the Guinean peso was devalued sharply. We recorded the following exchange rates (buying/selling rate): 23 December 1983: USD 1 = GWP 42.010 / 42.662 26 December 1983: USD 1 = GWP 84.270 / 84.922 Calculated devaluation: 50.0% (on average).
