General With effect from 1 January 1981, the vatu was introduced at a rate of 1 New Hebrides franc (NHF) = 1 vatu (VUV). From 1 January 1981 to 9 September 1981, the vatu was pegged to the French franc at a rate of FRF 1 = VUV 16.1616.

Comment on 1986 With effect from 23 October 1986, the vatu was devalued. We recorded the following exchange rates (buying/selling rate): 22 October 1986: USD 1 = VUV 99.08 / 101.26 23 October 1986: USD 1 = VUV 115.39 / 117.93 This corresponds to a depreciation of the vatu against the US dollar of 14.1%.
