General South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011. The South Sudanese pound replaced the Sudanese pound at a rate of 1:1 on 18 July 2011; the exchange period ended on 31 August 2011. On 1 September 2011, the South Sudanese pound became the sole legal tender. The South Sudanese pound was pegged to the US dollar from the beginning of September 2011 to mid-December 2015. Between July 2016 and December 2017 no exchange rates were available.
Methodology * From September 2011 to June 2014 we have no data on exchange rates for the euro in South Sudan. The quoted figures are comparable rates calculated on the basis of the rate for the US dollar in South Sudan (USD 1 = SSP 2.95) in conjunction with the respective euro reference exchange rate of the European Central Bank for the US dollar. Until June 2016 calculated on the basis of buying and selling rates (apart from comparable rates).

Comment on 2015-12 Exchange rate as of 23 December 2015. In mid-December 2015 the peg of the South Sudanese pound to the US dollar was abandoned. On the basis of the exchange rates of 1 and 23 December 2015, the South Sudanese pound experienced a devaluation of 83.4% against the euro (on average).
