Fast-track trainee programme


The fast-track trainee programme begins on 1 November or 1 May and takes 12 months to complete with alternating theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical parts are taught in the form of two to three-week long seminars which mostly take place in our conference centre in Eltville am Rhein. Normally, you will spend your practical period at the Bundesbank's Central Office in Frankfurt am Main.


The fast-track trainee programme is a flexible career entry programme. During the seminars you will intensify your economic and business administration knowledge as well as your legal knowledge in the area of central banking through discussion rounds, presentations and projects. During the practical periods you will be working on projects which you have selected from our project pool. This will give you the opportunity to get a feel for different subject areas or to specialise early on.

General conditions

You will be accommodated in the Bundesbank's conference centre in Eltville am Rhein for the duration of the seminars. We will also provide accommodation for you close to your respective place of work during the practical parts.

As a salaried employee in the public service you will receive €40,000 gross during your one-year traineeship.

Your prospects

You will have the chance to apply for jobs posted on our internal job opportunities page while you are still a trainee. If your application is successful, you may terminate the trainee programme ahead of schedule (after nine months at the earliest) and directly start working in your new position.

Generally, all our trainees have found a suitable position as salaried employees before they complete their career entry programme and are paid in line with the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes). Your annual starting gross salary will be around €49,100 and will increase to around €57,400 after one year on the job. Moreover, your job performance could make you eligible for civil servant status.

Our requirements profile

We expect the following from our future trainees

  • Above-average accredited Master's or equivalent degree specialising in economics
  • Very good written and oral communication skills in German
  • A high level of proficiency in English
  • Strong analytical skills in German
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying demands

The advertisement for the following year will be posted on our job opportunities page during the application period (December to January). There you will also find a link to our online application form. Please attach the following documents:

The applications will be reviewed once the application deadline has passed. If your application is successful, you will be invited to our selection procedure in order for us to get to know you better. The selection procedure is comprised of two parts, both of which are conducted in German.

Part 1

English test, written test: assessment to determine your intellectual abilities (etc)

Part 2

Group discussion, written assignment, presentation and structured interview, in-depth discussion (Economics and business administration).
