Monthly turnover data are available for industry and the construction sector. The results for the retail trade are also included in the calculation of private consumption.
Seasonally and working-day-adjusted or just working-day-adjusted time series - depending on the indicator - are provided in addition to the unadjusted figures. Seasonal and calendar adjustment of the turnover in industry is carried out using the X13 program of version 2.2.1 of JDemetra+. Retail turnover and turnover from trade in motor vehicles are adjusted using version 0.2.8 of the Census X-12-ARIMA program.
Real-time data are available for selected indicators.
Turnover in industry
The industrial turnover index, which the Federal Statistical Office calculates on a monthly basis, measures the development of turnover in all industrial enterprises with 50 or more employees in their own products and industrial services delivered to third parties in the reporting month.
Retail turnover and turnover from trade in motor vehicles
The indicator, which the Federal Statistical Office calculates on a monthly basis, measures developments in the turnover of enterprises that are mainly involved in trade and have a minimum annual turnover of €250,000. Turnover in the month under review is estimated on the basis of a sample of around 27,000 enterprises from a total of around 423,000 retail enterprises domiciled in Germany. As of January 2009, the enterprises selected for the sample are rotated on an annual basis. By contrast, a further approximately 700 large enterprises report continually. The first provisional results published for a reporting month are based on figures from nine German federal states. Consequently, the publication of the index number report, which contains reports for all German federal states and substitutes estimates for late reports with actual data, usually includes revisions. Both the figures for the retail trade as a whole and for its individual branches are reported. The figure shows the retail trade excluding the trade in motor vehicles and at petrol stations.
