Payments statistics

ESCB payments statistics (EZB/2020/59)

The ESCB payment statistics have been fundamentally revised. The amending Regulation means that the previous annual reporting requirements are being significantly expanded. In particular, the new reporting requirements reflect recent developments in payment transactions, the collection of fraud data, and cross-border card payments broken down by individual merchant category codes and recipient countries. From 1 January 2022, starting with the Q1 2022 and H1 2022 reporting periods, some items will be reported quarterly and most items will be reported biannually.

The amending Regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 11 December 2020. The amending Regulation and a response to the public consultation are available on the ECB website.

On 27 April 2021, the Bundesbank officially set out the new reporting requirements for both credit institutions and payment service providers that are not credit institutions. Documents relating to the implementation of the new requirements are available below.
