Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel is expecting to see a further decline in the use of banknotes and coins. Even so, cash is
deeply embedded in our everyday lives
because of its unique characteristics, he said in a video message at the Bundesbank’s cash symposium in Berlin. Bundesbank Executive Board member Burkhard Balz stressed that cash still has a valid role to play even as payments become increasingly electronic. -

Am 8. November 2022 beschloss der EZB-Rat, die Verfügbarkeit des EUREP-Rahmens (die am 15. Januar 2023 enden sollte) bis 15. Januar 2024 zu verlängern. Grundlage für diese Entscheidung war die Feststellung, dass die Bereitstellung vorsorglicher Euro-Liquiditätslinien über EUREP aus geldpolitischer Sicht noch immer geboten ist.

National Cash Forum established
The National Cash Forum has been established on the initiative of the Bundesbank, the being, as Bundesbank Executive Board member Burkhard Balz put it,
to preserve cash as an efficient and widely used means of payment in a changing payment landscape
. The forum will facilitate close dialogue between the associations of the banking industry, retail trade, consumer protection, the CIT industry, vending machine operators and the Bundesbank. The industry is set to meet here at least once a year. -

DEM coins intended for circulation
From 1 January 2002, euro banknotes and coins are legal tender in all EU member states participating in monetary union. This has nullified the legal tender status of all payment media denominated in Deutsche Mark.

For 20 years now, euro banknotes and coins have been part of the everyday lives of people in Germany and the euro area. To mark the anniversary, the Bundesbank met both with interested members of the public and with expert audiences on various occasions in 2022. The programme culminated in an anniversary ceremony at the end of the year.
