House prices in Germany fell significantly in 2023, according to the Bundesbank’s current Monthly Report. Residential properties were no longer affordable for many people owing to high inflation and increased interest rates. Demand for housing declined, increasingly shifting to the rental market, and the already high inflation in rents saw a significant further acceleration, the economists write. Overvaluations in the real estate market came down in 2023, but were not fully eliminated. The authors therefore believe that there is still a certain risk of price corrections.

For 20 years now, euro banknotes and coins have been part of the everyday lives of people in Germany and the euro area. To mark the anniversary, the Bundesbank met both with interested members of the public and with expert audiences on various occasions in 2022. The programme culminated in an anniversary ceremony at the end of the year.

Er galt vielen zunächst als „Teuro“ und genoss nur wenig Vertrauen. Vor rund 20 Jahren hatten laut einer Umfrage des Instituts für Demoskopie 70 Prozent der Befragten „wenig oder kein Vertrauen“ in den Euro, der am 1. Januar 2002 als Bargeld eingeführt wurde. Heute sprechen sich 82 Prozent der Deutschen für den Euro aus. Bei der Einführung des Euro-Bargelds im Januar 2002 spielte die Bundesbank eine bedeutende Rolle.
