German economic output probably declined somewhat in the final quarter of 2023, according to the January Monthly Report. Weak foreign demand continued to put a strain on industry and higher financing costs were still dampening investment. Uncertainty about the future direction of fiscal and climate policy is also likely to have weighed on economic activity, Bundesbank economists report. Moreover, consumers remained cautious and are unlikely to have increased their consumption by much.

Bundesbank Executive Board member Andreas Dombret has warned against giving preferential regulatory treatment to green investment. He added that such special rules were potentially dangerous to financial stability and noted that promoting the greening process should not take place through the back door via financial market regulation and banking supervision.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann and Executive Board member Sabine Mauderer say that central banks do have a part to play in forging a more sustainable financial system. But speaking at a conference in Frankfurt am Main, they both warned against overburdening monetary policymakers with climate policy objectives.
