A well functioning economy requires a stable banking system. Banking supervision is therefore responsible for monitoring credit institutions’ business activity and maintaining investor confidence. In Germany, the task of banking supervision is shared by the Bundesbank and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). In particular, the Bundesbank is in charge of monitoring the credit institutions.

Environmental sustainability European Central Bank (ECB) environmental footprint study of euro banknotes as a means of payment in the Eurosystem
The total environmental impact per person of a year’s worth of average cash payments in the euro area is very low. According to the ECB study, it is equivalent to driving a standard car for eight kilometres. The Eurosystem is committed to making euro banknotes as environmentally friendly as possible, whilst ensuring cash is widely available and accepted.
