Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered an energy crisis in 2022 that posed major challenges to the German economy and sparked broad debate on the economic ramifications of the marked rise in natural gas prices. In a new study, we examine the causes and consequences of this crisis and show how supply shocks and a surge in demand for natural gas storage impacted on natural gas prices and industrial production in Germany.

The Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) has published two reports which lay out specific measures to assess climate vulnerabilities. The Deutsche Bundesbank is about to become a partner in joint digital financial innovations developed by central banks from all over the world. Together, the French central bank and the Bundesbank will set up an innovation centre at their locations in Frankfurt am Main and Paris.

How will cash be used in the future? A recent Bundesbank study has investigated this question, outlining three different scenarios for cash payments in 2037. The study provides an idea of the social and economic environment in which cash will be embedded in the future.
