According to Bundesbank Executive Board member Joachim Wuermeling, banks should bear in mind, that there will eventually be a transition back to normal in banking regulation and supervision. “After the crisis, buffers will need to be replenished, and this will take longer when profitability is low – as is the case for many European banks,” Wuermeling said in a speech during a video conference.

“German economic output underwent a massive decline in the first quarter of 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to contain it,” the Bundesbank notes in the current issue of the Monthly Report. Since these measures were still in place in April and substantial restrictions are likely to persist in spite of an easing in some cases, the experts expect economic output in the second quarter to be significantly lower still.

Im ersten Quartal 2020 verringerte sich der Bestand an von finanziellen Mantelkapitalgesellschaften/Verbriefungszweckgesellschaften (FMKGs) im Euro-Währungsgebiet begebenen Schuldverschreibungen auf 1 526 Mrd €, verglichen mit 1 565 Mrd € am Ende des Vorquartals.

Im ersten Quartal 2020 belief sich der Bestand an von Investmentfonds (ohne Geldmarktfonds) begebenen Anteilen auf 11 463 Mrd € und war damit um 1 485 Mrd € niedriger als im Schlussquartal 2019. Dieser Rückgang war in erster Linie Preisänderungen und sonstigen Veränderungen im Umfang von -1 328 Mrd € geschuldet.

A new weekly activity index (WAI) for the German economy has been developed at the Bundesbank to assess the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the economy from a near-time perspective. The Bundesbank is using this new indicator as an input in its short-term economic analysis.
