About Carl Menger
Austrian-born Carl Menger is commonly regarded as the founding father of the Austrian school of economic thought. In his work "Principles of Economics", published in 1871, he argued that the value of a good is in each case determined by the subjectively estimated value attached to that good’s final unit ("marginal unit"), a circumstance which he referred to as the "law of marginal utility".
Other economists including Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, Friedrich von Wieser, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich August von Hayek subsequently built on his hypotheses.

Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €28.2 billion in December 2020, up €6.9 billion from the previous month’s level. Although the goods account surplus decreased, the surplus in invisible current transactions – comprising the services account as well as primary and secondary income – increased to a much greater degree.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has warned against government intervention in the market economy becoming the norm after the coronavirus pandemic, although it was important for the government to intervene strongly in the crisis. “But this must not become a normal state of affairs. I do not believe that governments know best when it comes to running a business,” he said in an interview with the “Augsburger Allgemeine” newspaper.
