The Bundesbank expects the German economy to grow strongly again after a limited setback in the final quarter of 2020 and first quarter of 2021. According to current projections, real gross domestic product could pick up sharply in the following two years and reach its pre-crisis level again in early 2022. This is predicated on the pandemic containment measures being quickly loosened from spring 2021 and ultimately expiring altogether in the early months of 2022.

The upswing in the global economy is gaining momentum, believes Bundesbank Executive Board member Andreas Dombret. In the run-up to the Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund, he argued for taking advantage of favourable economic conditions to increase the growth potential of national economies through structural reforms.

The International Monetary Fund reports that the German economy can look forward to the expansion continuing in the near term, but warns in its Article IV Consultation that external imbalances could cloud the upbeat outlook over the medium term.

Bundesbank Vice-President Claudia Buch believes that the capital markets union helps to make the financial system more stable. Speaking at the 2nd annual conference of the Community of Practice in Financial Research in Brussels, she also highlighted the importance of better access to data and information, improved communication of the benefits of integrated financial markets, and financial literacy.

The Bundesbank has published its inaugural environmental report, which outlines its environmental guideline and discloses its greenhouse gas emissions. "The Bundesbank aims to reduce its emissions by 25% by 2025," according to Bundesbank Executive Board member Johannes Beermann.
