Bereits in den vergangenen Jahren konnte die Deutsche Bundesbank wichtige Fortschritte im Bereich der absoluten Verbräuche erzielen. Bis 2023 hat sie den Gesamtverbrauch von Energie, Wasser und Papier weiter gesenkt. 2024 wurden weitere Maßnahmen eingeleitet, darunter die Reduktion von Büroflächen durch die Einführung flexibler Arbeitsmodelle. Die Grundlagen der Datenerfassung wurden verbessert, um dadurch zielgerichtetere Maßnahmen zur Erreichung der Ziele einzuleiten.

The Bundesbank’s greenhouse gas emissions came in at around 13,676 tonnes of CO2 equivalents in 2021, which corresponds to a reduction of just over 52.3% compared with the 2013/14 base value (28,650 t). As in 2020, the restrictions on public life caused by the coronavirus pandemic resulted in reduced emissions in 2021 as well. This was because business travel were still very low and reductions were made in heat consumption.

The Bundesbank aims to use resources sustainably, minimise its environmental impact and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by its business operations.

The Bank has achieved the reduction targets that it set itself for 2020 and 2025 ahead of schedule. This is due, in particular, to purchasing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, switching heat energy sources and reducing heat consumption.

For the Bundesbank, active environmental protection means using resources sustainably, reducing their consumption and taking measures that help to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from our operational processes - by 25 percent by 2025.

The Bundesbank has achieved a surplus of 1 billion euros in 2016. This is 2.2 billion euros less than in the previous year. Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann justified this at the annual press conference with increased risk provisions.

A further milestone has now been reached with the adopted environmental programme: This programme contains a large number of concrete measures with which we can reliably achieve our goal of "25 to 25".

Schon im Jahr 2009 hat die Bundesbank ihr Umweltmanagement neu ausgerichtet. Der nun vorliegende Umweltbericht ist ein Ergebnis dieser Strategie. Dafür hat die Bundesbank erstmals umfassend die Umweltauswirkungen ihrer betrieblichen Prozesse analysiert.
