Valuable insights into digital currencies Work placements

Hello, my name is Hyeonhee Kim and I am currently doing an internship in the ecosystem team of the Digital Euro department at Deutsche Bundesbank.

I have always had a strong interest in finance, and among the various areas, crypto assets, stablecoins, and Central Bank Digital Currencies stand out as some of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving fields. Germany’s ongoing shift from a cash-based to a contactless payment society also caught my attention and made me eager to understand this transformation from a central bank’s perspective.

At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by the authority and prestige of the Bundesbank, but once I started, I was truly impressed by how modern and team-oriented the work environment is, even within such a powerful and respected organization. The Digital Euro is one of the most significant ongoing initiatives, so everyone in my team is highly committed and focused. At the same time, there is a strong sense of collegiality. Colleagues are supportive, respectful, and always willing to help, even in busy times.

Currently, I’m working on research related to stablecoins and crypto assets, which are closely linked to the broader discussion around the Digital Euro. My work supports the analytical foundation for decision-making in this area. I gained valuable insights into digital currencies and the unique role a central bank plays in ensuring financial stability and inclusion. What impressed me most was the macro-level perspective, thinking not only in terms of financial technology, but also in terms of how it affects various market participants, from small and medium-sized institutions to large corporations and high-volume transactions. Beyond the technical knowledge, I learned how inclusive design and broad economic considerations are key to shaping the future of finance.
