Bundesbank mourns the passing of Hans Tietmeyer

The Deutsche Bundesbank mourns the passing of its former president, Hans Tietmeyer, who died on 27 December 2016 at the age of 85.

Hans Tietmeyer started working at the Bundesbank in 1990, first as a Member of the Executive Board and then as its Vice-President. He was appointed to the post of Bundesbank President on 1 October 1993, a position he held until 1999. During his tenure as President, he epitomised the Bundesbank's independence and stability orientation, and he also played a major role in paving the way for the European economic and monetary union.

"Hans Tietmeyer was an outstanding president, whose actions always followed clear and consistent lines aimed at maintaining monetary stability," Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann said. "Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family and loved ones," Weidmann added.
