2 Euro commemorative coin “Konrad Adenauer”

€2 commemorative coin “Konrad Adenauer” in the “Unity and Justice and Freedom” series

The German government has decided to mint a €2 commemorative coin entitled “Konrad Adenauer” scheduled to be issued on 8 January 2026. The coin is in honour of Konrad Adenauer (1876–1967), the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the second coin to be issued in the “Unity and Justice and Freedom” series. Each year, a new €2 commemorative coin honouring politicians whose actions particularly shaped the history of the Federal Republic of Germany will be issued.

The design on the national side shows a three-quarter portrait of Konrad Adenauer, whose 150th birthday will be celebrated in 2026. In the inner part of the coin, we see Adenauer’s head in the centre, framed by his name and the dates of his birth and death.

The inner part of the coin also features the country code “D” indicating that the country of issue is Germany, the year “2026,” and the mint mark of the respective mint (“A,” “D,” “F,” “G,” or “J”) in the upper half. The lower half features the insignia of the Berlin-based artist Marianne Dietz. The outer ring of the coin shows the 12 stars of the European flag.

The European side is the common reverse side of the regular issue €2 coin in circulation since 2007, depicting a map of Europe without national borders. The technical parameters of the coin are the same as those of any regular issue €2 coin.

As on regular issue German €2 coins, the edge of the commemorative issue bears the inscription: “EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT” (UNITY AND JUSTICE AND FREEDOM) and a stylised Federal eagle.

30 million of these coins are to be minted for circulation.

The coin will be legal tender throughout the euro area.
