€20 collectors' coin “225th birthday of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff”

€20 collectors' coin “225th birthday of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff”

The German government has decided to mint a €20 collectors’ coin marking the 225th birthday of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797-1848). The coin pays tribute to the well-known German writer and composer, who is regarded as one of the most important German-speaking poets of the 19th century.

The coin is made of sterling silver (alloy Ag 925). It weighs 18 g, has a diameter of 32.5 mm and will be made available both in mint condition and with a proof-like finish. The mint condition coins will be brought into circulation at their face value (€20).

The collector quality coins with a proof-like finish will be higher than their face value and will be issue by the Münze Deutschland (Germany’s official sales agency for collector coins). The coin was designed by Stuttgart-based artist Anna Auras.

The picture side shows Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Her hair, loosened by the wind, can be regarded as a symbol of her liberation from the tight constraints of the era. Her facial expression shows determination and contradicts the expectations of gender and standing that were commonplace at that time. The background, suggested by the flight of a bird and silhouette of the Alps, portrays the author’s great love of nature.
The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “G” for the State Mint of Baden-Württemberg in Karlsruhe, the year 2022, and the twelve stars of Europe. In addition, the coin is marked “SILBER 925”. Its smooth edge is embossed with the inscription: “SO GROSSES KLEINOD, EINMAL SEIN STATT GELTEN!” (SO GREAT A TREASURE, TO BE FOR ONCE AND NOT TO SEEM!)
