As a witness and survivor of the Holocaust, Margot Friedländer worked tirelessly for freedom, democracy and humanity and was committed to preventing a repetition of what was done to millions of her contemporaries. Margot Friedländer influenced generations. Her attitude, courage and outstretched hand of reconciliation touched thousands. She never tired of meeting young people and telling them: “You are not responsible for what happened. But you are responsible for ensuring that it never happens again,” whilst exemplifying this ideal herself.

The coin was designed by Berlin-based artist Anna Steinmann.

The picture side features the necklace of amber beads given to Margot Friedländer by her mother before her deportation, which Friedländer wore all her life. The casually arranged string of beads and the quotation “FOCUS ON WHAT CONNECTS YOU” merge to form a striking image. The dates of her birth and death can be seen in the centre of the coin: 1921‑2025. The inscription “MARGOT FRIEDLÄNDER” appears at the top of the coin and is supplemented by dots in the bottom half to form a ring-shaped structure. The motif subtly transports one of Margot Friedländer’s key messages and impresses the onlooker with its aesthetic design.

The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “A” for the State Mint of Berlin, the year 2026, and the twelve stars of Europe. In addition, the words “SILBER 500” (mint condition coin) “SILBER 925” (proof-like finish coin) are minted on the coin. The coin’s smooth edge is engraved with the inscription:

“SEID MENSCHEN • IHR HABT ES IN DER HAND •” (BE HUMAN • IT’S IN YOUR HANDS)
