The German government has decided to mint a €35 collectors’ coin entitled “125 years of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway”, which is scheduled for issue at 17 September 2026. The coin pays tribute to a unique means of transport and a world-renowned symbol of the city of Wuppertal.

The coin is minted in mint condition and with a proof-like finish (see photo). It has a diameter of 32.5 mm.

The picture side of the coin was designed by Berlin artist Heinz Hoyer. The reverse was designed by Berlin artist Bodo Broschat.

The picture side shows an articulated railcar of the current series as it exits the main suspension railway station. Small, unobtrusive groups of people have been added to the station forecourt for scale, making the monumental structure readable. A young elephant is depicted in the lower segment of the coin, separated by the curved bridge arch, bringing to mind the dramatic fall of Tuffi the circus elephant. The design impresses with its solid but lively composition due to its urban power and allows the viewer to believably imagine themselves in the presence of the groundbreaking floating train. The articulated railcar’s “hovering” is enhanced by the localised use of the colour blue. The interplay between the railway and the surrounding architecture skilfully illustrates its landmark status and its contribution to Wuppertal's identity.

The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “A” for the State Mint of Berlin, the year 2026, and the twelve stars of Europe. In addition, the words “SILBER 500” (mint condition coin) “SILBER 925” (proof-like finish coin) are minted on the coin.

The coin’s smooth edge is engraved with the inscription:

“VOHWINKEL BIS OBERBARMEN BIS” (“VOHWINKEL TO OBERBARMEN TO”)
