The financial accounts supplement traditional economic statistics by tracking the cash flows of an economy. They provide a precise picture of which sectors raise or provide capital and what financial instruments (such as loans or stocks) are used in the process. In addition, they capture both transactions occurring within a year and the resulting assets and liabilities.
