A substantial share of bank loans of euro area banks is secured with real estate. In a new study, we examine whether, in the low interest rate environment, banks invested more in foreign real estate-backed lending. Our results suggest that regulatory differences between the bank’s home country and possible destination countries matter for banks’ search for yield.

Die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) hat heute Änderungen an ihrer Organisationsstruktur im Bereich Bankenaufsicht angekündigt, um eine weiterhin effektive und effiziente Aufsicht über Banken innerhalb und außerhalb des Euro-Währungsgebiets zu gewährleisten.

Die Ersparnisbildung (netto) im Euroraum verringerte sich in den vier Quartalen bis zum ersten Quartal 2020 auf 832 Mrd €, verglichen mit 871 Mrd € in den vier Quartalen bis zum Schlussquartal 2019. Die Nettosachvermögensbildung im Eurogebiet sank aufgrund einer rückläufigen Vermögensbildung der privaten Haushalte und nichtfinanziellen Kapitalgesellschaften von zuvor 584 Mrd € auf 573 Mrd €. Der Finanzierungsüberschuss des Euroraums gegenüber der übrigen Welt ging von 295 Mrd € auf 267 Mrd € zurück, was der geringeren Ersparnisbildung (netto) zuzuschreiben war.
