The average inflation expectations of households in Germany for the next 12 months decreased by 0.1 percentage point in August to 3.2 %. They are thus 0.5 percentage point above the expectations from February 2026, before the outbreak of the war in the Middle East. In response to a qualitative question on inflation rate developments, the share of households expecting inflation rates to rise during the next twelve months saw a slight increase of 1 percentage point on the previous month to 72 %. This figure is 20 percentage points higher than the level in February. Average expectations for the inflation rate in three years’ time declined in August, dropping by 0.2 percentage points to 3.3 %. Expectations for the average over the next five years were unchanged in August for the third month in a row at 3.5 %.
