Two years have been spent exploring the possible design and distribution of a digital euro. Now, the Governing Council of the ECB is moving to the next phase of the project. This will lay the foundations for a potential digital euro. It will involve, amongst other things, finalising the digital euro rulebook and selecting providers that could develop a digital euro platform and infrastructure. However, a decision on whether to actually issue a digital euro will be made at a later date.

In the second quarter of 2023, households’ financial assets grew by €94 billion, standing at €7,492 billion at the quarter’s end. Following a significant decline in the previous year, this was already the third consecutive quarter-on-quarter increase. Over the second quarter of 2023, households increased their claims by €59 billion and recorded valuation gains of €36 billion.

Der digitale Euro werde den Standard setzen im Hinblick auf die Sicherheit, Geschwindigkeit und Verlässlichkeit beim Bezahlen und zugleich werde er die kostengünstigste digitale Bezahlform sein, sagte Bundesbankpräsident Joachim Nagel im Interview mit dem Deutschlandfunk.

EZB-Rat gibt nach Abschluss der zweijährigen Untersuchungsphase zu Ausgestaltung und Bereitstellung eines digitalen Euro den Startschuss für die Vorbereitungsphase. Die Vorbereitungsphase legt den Grundstein für einen möglichen digitalen Euro: unter anderem sollen das Regelwerk fertiggestellt und Anbieter für die Entwicklung von Plattform und Infrastruktur ausgewählt werden. Die Vorbereitungsphase ebnet den Weg für eine mögliche zukünftige Entscheidung über die Ausgabe eines digitalen Euro.
