Residents – with the exception of monetary financial institutions (MFIs), investment stock corporations, investment companies for their special funds and individuals – are required to report their claims and liabilities vis-à-vis non-residents on a monthly basis if the sum of the claims or the sum of the liabilities amounts to more than €5 million or the equivalent value in another currency at the end of a given calendar month.

Die Bundesbank führt vierteljährlich die Umfrage zum Kreditgeschäft der Banken (Bank Lending Survey, BLS) durch. In den Ergebnissen für 2023 wird deutlich, dass die geldpolitische Straffung ihre intendierte Wirkung entfaltete, was sich in strengeren Kreditrichtlinien und rückläufiger Kreditnachfrage äußerte. Außerdem beeinflussen klimabedingte Risiken zunehmend die Kreditangebotspolitik der Banken. 

Die aggregierte Summe der Aktiva der Kreditinstitute mit Sitz in der EU verringerte sich von 32,66 Billionen € im September 2022 auf 31,58 Billionen € im September 2023. Dies entspricht einem Rückgang um 3,30 %.
