Changes in bank office statistics in 2018
The consolidation process in the German banking sector continued in 2018. However, the number of institutions did not fall as steeply as in the year before on account of new additions in the context of banks operating in Europe and on the international stage preparing for Brexit. Over the course of the year, the overall number of credit institutions fell by 40 to 1,783. This corresponds to a 2.2% decline compared with a drop of 3.4% in 2017.

Der gewichtete Indikator der Kreditfinanzierungskosten für neue Kredite an Unternehmen sank im Mai 2019 um 5 Basispunkte gegenüber dem Vormonat auf 1,57 %; ausschlaggebend hierfür war vor allem der Zinseffekt. Der gewichtete Indikator der Kreditfinanzierungskosten für neue Wohnungsbaukredite an private Haushalte blieb mit 1,73 % im Mai 2019 weitgehend unverändert. Die gewichteten Zinssätze für neue Einlagen von Unternehmen und für neue Einlagen privater Haushalte blieben im Berichtsmonat mit 0,12 % bzw. 0,36 % ebenfalls nahezu konstant.

BaFin activated the countercyclical capital buffer

BaFin has issued a general administrative act regarding the domestic countercyclical capital buffer rate. The rate is to be raised from 0 percent to 0.25 percent as of 1 July 2019. This increase is a preventive measure intended to enhance the resilience of the banking system.
