German balance of payments in December 2020
Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €28.2 billion in December 2020, up €6.9 billion from the previous month’s level. Although the goods account surplus decreased, the surplus in invisible current transactions – comprising the services account as well as primary and secondary income – increased to a much greater degree.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has warned against government intervention in the market economy becoming the norm after the coronavirus pandemic, although it was important for the government to intervene strongly in the crisis. “But this must not become a normal state of affairs. I do not believe that governments know best when it comes to running a business,” he said in an interview with the “Augsburger Allgemeine” newspaper.

Der Absatz von Schuldverschreibungen durch Ansässige im Euro-Währungsgebiet lag im Dezember 2020 insgesamt bei 543,6 Mrd €. Die Tilgungen beliefen sich auf 621,7 Mrd €. Dadurch ergaben sich Nettotilgungen in Höhe von 78,1 Mrd €. Die Jahreswachstumsrate des Umlaufs an Schuldverschreibungen, die von Ansässigen im Euroraum begeben wurden, stieg im Dezember 2020 auf 7,6 % nach 7,5 % im November.

Bundesbank to start climate-related disclosures for its non-monetary policy euro portfolio in mid-2022
Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann welcomes the common stance agreed by the ECB Governing Council for sustainable and responsible investment principles for the euro-denominated non-monetary policy portfolios of Eurosystem central banks, emphasising that the Bundesbank is already working on incorporating these principles into its investment practices and disclosures.
