Bundesbank receives large quantities of damaged banknotes for analysis following catastrophic floods

The Bundesbank has been directly confronted with the fallout from the devastating floods that hit North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in mid-July. It is analysing and replacing soaked and damaged banknotes in a process allowing affected inhabitants to be reimbursed with the value of their damaged cash. Bundesbank Executive Board member Johannes Beermann visited the National Analysis Centre for Counterfeit and Damaged Banknotes and Coins in Mainz for an update on the progress made so far.

Detection of counterfeit banknotes
A standardised range of authenticity features such as tactile writing, watermarks, an inscribed security thread and a see-through register on all banknote denominations offer protection against counterfeiting.
The lower half of the large denomination number on the front of the DM500 and DM1,000 banknotes contains an additional authenticity feature: the colour changes from gold to green if the banknote is tilted.

The expert panel is aimed at experienced experts from the anti-counterfeiting unit of central banks who need a detailed understanding of techniques for succeeding in the fight against forged money. Participants are expected to make an active contribution to the discussions and will be invited to present and discuss their own topics or cases.
