The Bundesbank has launched its special exhibition "Guardian of the currency – 60 years of the Bundesbank in the eyes of the media". At the opening ceremony, Otmar Issing, formerly chief economist at the Bundesbank and the European Central Bank, discussed the role and tasks of central bank communications with representatives from the German media.

In the view of Andreas Dombret, Executive Board member of the Bundesbank, the robust governance of the banking sector can help restore market forces and foster confidence. However, he pointed out that supervisors' and regulators' area of competence also has boundaries. "The red line has to be drawn where entrepreneurial responsibility and market forces should prevail," Mr Dombret said in an address to the Savings Bank Conference in Potsdam.

The consolidation process in the German banking sector gained momentum last year. Over the course of 2016, the overall number of credit institutions (in Germany) fell by 72 to 1,888 institutions. This corresponds to a 3.7% decline in 2016 compared with a drop of 1.5% in 2015.

Die Jahreswachstumsrate des Umlaufs an von Ansässigen im Euro-Währungsgebiet begebenen Schuldverschreibungen lag im März 2017 bei 1,4 % nach 1,3 % im Vormonat. Die Jahreswachstumsrate des Umlaufs an von Ansässigen im Euro-Währungsgebiet emittierten börsennotierten Aktien betrug im Berichtsmonat 0,9 %, verglichen mit 0,7 % im Februar. Die Jahreswachstumsrate des Umlaufs an von nichtfinanziellen Kapitalgesellschaften begebenen Schuldverschreibungen sank von 9,9 % im Februar 2017 auf 9,4 % im Berichtsmonat.
