Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has called on the euro-area countries to embrace fiscal prudence, arguing in a speech in Hamburg that the tighter the fiscal space, the more central banks will come under political pressure to stabilise economic activity in the short run – even if that does mean compromising on price stability.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann underscored the Bundesbank's importance for the stability culture in Germany and Europe. "Over the last 60 years, the Bundesbank has not been afraid to ruffle a few feathers if it sees stability risks," he said in Stuttgart. That had not damaged its reputation among the general public.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has acknowledged the role of Sveriges Riksbank, the Swedish central bank, as an important innovator in central bank history. "Being the world´s oldest central bank, and the third-oldest bank, it has been a trailblazer for monetary institutions from the get-go", he said in his speech at the 350th Anniversary of the Sveriges Riksbank in Stockholm.

The finance ministers and central bank governors of the G20 countries met in Baden-Baden on 17 and 18 March. Federal Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble and Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann reported on the outcomes of the meeting at a press conference to be held afterwards.
