General South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011. The South Sudanese pound replaced the Sudanese pound at a rate of 1:1 on 18 July 2011; the exchange period ended on 31 August 2011. On 1 September 2011, the South Sudanese pound became the sole legal tender. The South Sudanese pound was pegged to the US dollar from the beginning of September 2011 to mid-December 2015. Between July 2016 and December 2017 no exchange rates were available.
