General With effect from 1 March 1992, a multiple exchange rate system was introduced. Exchange rate application from 1 March 1992 to 28 February 1993: Official exchange rate: for 40% of income from exports, services (including travel and investment income) and transfers (including pensions and benefit payments) as well as for payments for the import of certain goods (including petroleum products and fertilisers). Free market rate (see commentary on value): for the remaining 60% of the income listed above as well as for all other transactions. The multiple exchange rate system was unified on 1 March 1993. Listed against the euro as of January 1999, see BBEX3:M:INR:EUR:CA:AA:A01 (exchange rates in India) and as of January 2000 BBEX3:M:INR:EUR:BB:AC:A01 (euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank).
Methodology The exchange rates specified for the period from July 1960 to July 1993 were converted using the direct quotation method.

We recorded the following exchange rates (buying/selling rate using the indirect quotation method): 28 June 1991: INR 100 = DEM 8.5700 / 8.4950 1 July 1991: INR 100 = DEM 7.8850 / 7.8150 3 July 1991: INR 100 = DEM 7.0900 / 7.0275 On the basis of the exchange rates on 28 June and 3 July 1991, the Indian rupee depreciated by 17.3%.
