Economist for macroeconometric modelling (Limited to 3 years)

The “Macroeconomic Analysis and Projections” Division analyses and forecasts macroeconomic developments in Germany and investigates structural aspects of the German economy. It bases its macroeconomic forecasts on a large, established macroeconometric model used not only for the forecasting process, but also for sensitivity and scenario analyses – in the context of assessing economic shocks or economic policy measures, for example. In a project the semi-structural model is intended to be comprehensively modernised and further developed.

Valuable work: your role with us

  • You will play a key role in conceptually redesigning the structure of the future macro model and developing a framework that integrates VAR-based expectation formation as well as the adjustment costs for economic agents.
  • Your work will also focus on strengthening long-term theoretical relationships in the model and their associated simulation properties.
  • You will estimate behavioural equations and carry out simulation calculations to empirically substantiate the newly established model and review the results it produces.
  • Together with the team, you will implement the modernised model and ensure that it can be reliably used for forecasting and sensitivity and scenario analyses.

Unique assets: your skills and qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in a degree programme with a focus on economics, with an above-average grade (2.49 or better)
  • Experience of conducting independent research work, as demonstrated by your own publications and/or (soon-to-be) completed dissertation
  • Very good knowledge of macroeconomic theory and modern econometric techniques
  • Knowledge of the national accounts
  • Practical programming experience with Matlab and preferably also Dynare
  • Experience with macroeconomic models (preferably large and semi-structural) is desired
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to assess complex economic issues and explain them in an audience-appropriate manner
  • Structured, independent and solution-oriented working methods
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Good command of German and very good command of English
