Expert Panel on the minimum requirements for risk management (MaRisk)

On the expert panel on the Minimum Requirements for Risk Management (Mindestanforderungen an das Risikomanagement, or MaRisk), the Bundesbank and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) report on current supervisory developments, discuss matters of policy and interpretation with the financial sector, and present revisions to the MaRisk and the guidelines on the supervisory assessment of bank-internal capital adequacy concepts for consultation. The idea behind financial sector involvement is to ensure that enhancements to prudential requirements are always in keeping with banking practice.

The Minimum Requirements for Risk Management are a circular issued by BaFin on the basis of section 25a of the Banking Act (Kreditwesengesetz) staking out a principles-based perimeter for risk management at credit institutions. The guidelines on the supervisory assessment of bank-internal capital adequacy concepts expand upon the MaRisk by detailing the prudential standards for calculating internal capital requirements.
