At present, their overall potential is spread across the entire continent, he writes in an oped for the Handelsblatt. In his view, a digital financial market union "would be a highly ambitious new project that would be worth the effort to make it work".

The Bundesbank posted a profit of €2.0 billion for the 2017 financial year, compared with €1.0 billion one year earlier. Following an allocation to the reserves, the remaining distributable profit of €1.9 billion (previous year: €0.4 billion) was transferred in full today to the Federal Government pursuant to section 27 number 2 of the Bundesbank Act (Bundesbankgesetz).

According to Bundesbank estimates, the German economy is booming. As described in the current issue of the Monthly Report, the burgeoning order books of industrial firms suggests that the rapid pace of expansion achieved in the course of 2017 will continue into the new year.

Housing prices continued to rise in 2017. Price exaggerations in German towns and cities were between 15% and 30% and in the big cities they were as high as 35%, according to the latest Bundesbank Monthly Report.

Am 26. Januar 2018 beschloss der EZB-Rat, die isländische Krone wieder in das Verzeichnis der Währungen aufzunehmen, für die die EZB die täglich ermittelten Euro-Referenzkurse veröffentlicht. Bundesbank Executive Board member Carl-Ludwig Thiele considers Bitcoin a risky and highly speculative form of investment. "It’s also possible for Bitcoin holdings to be completely wiped out," he writes in an op-ed for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. In addition, he draws attention to Bitcoin’s high level of energy consumption, citing Bundesbank estimates that settling a Bitcoin transaction uses roughly 460,000 times as much electricity as a normal transfer.

As in the past, German consumers prefer to pay for most of their purchases using cash. This is revealed by the Bundesbank's recent 2017 survey on "Payment behaviour in Germany". In terms of volume, however, the significance of cash has waned somewhat. As a share of the combined value of all payments made by private individuals, cash fell below the 50% mark for the first time.
