The June 2021 edition of the Bundesbank’s Monthly Report outlines the outlook for the German economy for 2021 to 2023 and analyses how the central bank’s asset purchases increase the sensitivity of government finances to interest rate changes. It also features an article on central government debt and why interest payment premiums should be booked on an accrual basis, while, on the topic of local government debt, a further article discusses how local government budget imbalances can be avoided and cash advances limited.

The May 2021 edition of the Monthly Report comments on the economic situation in Germany in spring 2021.

The Bundesbank’s April 2021 Monthly Report outlines the impact of monetary policy depending on the debt situation of the non-financial private sector and presents evidence for the euro area. It also examines firms’ assessments and expectations during the pandemic based on findings from the Bundesbank Online Panel Firms. A further article discusses the payment options opened up by digital money. 

The March 2021 Monthly Report analyses Germany’s balance of payments for 2020 and outlines the new European prudential framework for investment firms.

The Bundesbank is not distributing a profit to the Federal Government for 2020 – for the first time since 1979. The main reason was the greater level of risk provisioning.

The February 2021 edition of the Monthly Report comments on the economic situation in Germany in winter 2020/2021.

The January 2021 edition of the Monthly Report analyses the slowdown in productivity growth in the euro area and describes the data collection methodology and analysis options for the new securities holding statistics on banking groups. It also discusses the two-tier system for remunerating reserve holdings and its impact on banks and financial markets.

Estimates by the Bundesbank suggest that banknotes worth around €268 billion were in circulation in Germany in 2018. Of that amount, roughly 20% was used directly for transactions. The other, far larger share – somewhere in the region of €200 billion – was being hoarded, i.e. stored for an extended period of time by households and firms.

The December 2020 edition of the Monthly Report outlines Germany’s economic outlook for 2021 to 2023 and explores the informative value of national fiscal indicators in the case of debt at the European level. In addition, it describes the national implementation of the European banking package in Germany through the Risk Reduction Act (Risikoreduzierungsgesetz – RiG) and analyses the profitability and financing of German enterprises in 2019.

The October 2020 edition of the Monthly Report analyses developments in the German banking system during the negative interest rate phase and outlines patterns of international business cycles. It also features an article on the protracted rise in real estate prices in Germany from a macroeconomic perspective, taking into account transmission channels and fundamental determinants. Finally, the report explains state government budget figures for 2019.

In the first half of 2020, the global coronavirus pandemic led to the most severe economic slump in Germany in decades. Governments and central banks around the world have taken extensive measures to stabilise the economy as well as labour and financial markets.

The September 2020 edition of the Monthly Report analyses the impact of monetary policy on the euro exchange rate and investigates global financial interconnectedness as well as spillover effects between the G20 countries. In addition, it discusses the performance of German credit institutions in 2019.
