Payments statistics

General information

Statistics about payments in Germany serve primarily as an important data source for establishing, managing and monitoring payment and securities settlement systems. In addition, statistics about the structure and scope of the payments are used in tandem with monetary statistical indicators for analysis at national and international levels. This information is obtained from the "Statistics on Payments and Securities Trading, Clearing and Settlement in Germany" (Deutsche Bundesbank) as well as from the European Central Bank's country-specific payments statistics tables and the Bank for International Settlements' publication "Statistics on payment, clearing and settlement systems in the CPSS countries".

In order to acquire a comprehensive picture of the German market, all institutions that process payments for their customers must be recorded. Therefore, payments statistics has to be reported by all domestic payment service providers. The institution initially commissioned with a payment by the customer (eg as the transferring institution or the first collecting institution) is responsible for submitting the report. It is of no relevance whether the payment was processed by the reporting institution itself or by a third party. Hence, institutions which commission other institutions to process their payment transactions also have to submit reports for the payments statistics.
